Put-in

There are at least two spots to put a canoe or kayak in at Dry Falls Lake.

The actual put-ins are classic narrow mud holes in cattails and bullrush reeds. This is a great way to slip the canoe or kayak in the water with out getting it all scraped up. The main draw back is wading in and out of the muck. Other then that it is a great way to launch.

The cost to launch and park is included if you are camping at Sun Lakes Park. If you are a day user you will need the Discover Pass to utilize the park.

There is limited parking. This is a popular spot for anglers. If you are into any fishing paddling and using a rod and reel might be a good combination here.

Descriptions

Paddling Dry Falls Lake June 16, 2011 with the air perfumed with wild roses.

This is another drum roll big bang for the buck paddling location. In other words the location is stunning with several hundred foot high cliffs adorning much of the lake and greenery along the shoreline and hills of sagebrush and wildflowers stretching off into the horizon.

The lake can be busy with anglers and parking can be a premium. The route varies in depth but much of the southern end of this paddle is extremely shallow. When shallow there are fewer if any boats to bothered by. There are no fossil fuel engines allowed on this water so it is quite. The primary sounds are from echoes off the cliffs from sneezes or the traffic from Highway 17 above the cliffs.

This lake can possibly be a great family style paddling outing for people with some skills and direction when it comes gear and safety.

Location
Sun Lakes State Park in the Coulee Corridor of Central Washington State just south of the town of Coulee City.

The lake is located in the northern section of the Sun Lakes State Park a Washington State Park. Here is a link to a map of Sun Lakes.

The distance from Park Lake to Dry Falls Lake is a few miles of paved and then bumpy dirt road from Umattila Rock trail.

When
Spring has flowers birds, summer has heat and fall is cooler with fewer crowds.

Warnings
There is a lot of poison ivy in the launch and along the shoreline in spots. Heat and sun can be intense in the summer months. I suspect rattlesnakes make some of this area home. Shallow conditions in much of the lake. Rock and other submerged hazards abound here. Note that fighter jets and other aircraft can buzz the coulee at any given moment. This could be heart attack time for some. Hearing protection is a must. The ROAR of fighter jets above, off the water and bouncing off the rock cliffs could possibly be deafening and terrifying if you don't know what it is and not prepared mentally. You have been warned.

Paddle route
There are at least two different sections to the lake. The north half is deeper with more rocks, island, cliffs and the south end of the lake is SHALLOW with cattails, bullrush, poison ivy mixed with roses that bloom and perfume the air in the spring and early summer.

Nature
Numerous birds in and around Dry Falls Lake. The song birds will serenade you while paddling. The Osprey will watch you and scream from above.

Dry Falls Lake as you can see is in the first picture to the right is in a bowl of cliffs of Dry Falls a prehistoric waterfall location.

The shoreline is made up of talus from the cliffs, reeds, bulrush, cattails, roses, poison ivy and much more. The sagebrush and other spots are ALIVE with wildflowers in the spring and early summer like it was June 2011.

Provisions

There are not provisions or services of any kind at Dru Falls Lake. There is small amount of parking, pit toilet and that is it besides the put-in locations.

For stuff you need either bring it or try the camp store in the Sun Lakes Resort next to the main Sun Lakes campground. It is well stocked camp store with some camping supplies and food.

Coulee City is the next place to pick much of anything that resembles food.

Additional Information

Deliverance rating. The crazy meter is pretty low here. The state park is managed well and whack jobs don't seem to have the cash for gas to make it this far?

Tranquility Ranking
One way to up the tranquility rank besides taking Valium, until a National Day of Silence, no fossil fuel noise, try hearing protection.

The lake can be very tranquil if the wind is kind to you. Plus if the traffic on the highway above is not to loud this is nice place to getaway. There are no fossil fuel engines on the lake so that noise is not a problem. There are military jets and other planes that can freak a person out.
