ISP, Internet Service provider
Connectivity
In real estate they say location is everything. The Internet connection location users have affect the SERPs they get when doing keyword search results.
Local or long distance? More often then not, I connect to the Internet using Sprint or Hughes Net Internet Network Satellite. Sprint is located in Long Beach Calif
California. Hughes is in ... This adversely affects the SERPs in particular when doing searches for local services like lawn mowing Bothell Washington.
Each connection to the
Internet has an address called an
IP address.
Each IP address is like a street address. Each IP address is located someplace on Earth and is located like when you make a cell phone call that accesses a cell tower to the provider. SERPs are often times affected by location.
Most people have no clue where their service provider is located in terms of accessing the Internet. The same search using different providers or across the border in Canada make for interesting and very frustrating SERPs. Find out what your IP address is right now. Notice you might not be getting SERPs from where you think. Sometimes Sprint access is from Long Beach California and other times Reston Virginia. If you are looking local information in Seattle Washington it can have affect on the SERPs.
There is lack of standardization in web page construction and how each terminal, browser sees the page and displays it to end users. When putting together web pages it reminds me of the need to have a wall of monitors running a variety of web browsers looking like Homer Simpson at work in the power plant with a wall of monitors. Toss in people making different connections around the world hopping their results are the same as in Timbuktu. Not so. This is a situation when considering SERP.
Customers have complained they could not see their SERP or find their site indexed in Google or other search engines in different parts of the world. IDOWEBS.com is operated out of Western Washington State. Just a short drive away across the Canadian border the SERP is different. Kind of like the Verizon ad on TV where they say, "Can you hear me now?" Testing the SEO Web Design in different browsers on different on different operating systems, different machines, different geographical locations will all show a variety of results at any given moment. The SERPs are never static they are ever changing from minute to minute based on many things.
